Back to Nature at the TPC of Myrtle Beach

Every golfer knows the TPC brand name and the service and course conditions that are associated with them. The TPC of Myrtle Beach is no exception, continuously ranked among the top courses in South Carolina. In fact they not only won 2005 Myrtle Beach Course of the year and they were just named South Carolina Course of the Year 2005 as well.

I have played several of the TPC courses and the reason I love Myrtle Beach so much is because it is not overdeveloped with homes. You will only see home sites on one three-hole stretch and the rest of the golf course is all towering pines, lakes, and beautiful grasses. Tom Fazio did a wonderful job of designing a golf course that is very fair and enjoyable from the forward tee boxes but an excellent test of golf from the tips.

The club recently completed all steps necessary to become a fully Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. The Audubon Program promotes ecologically sound land management and the conservation of natural resources. They are one of only two clubs along the Grand Strand to receive this certification.

Anyone who has played the TPC can vouch that there is all kinds of wildlife to be seen during your round. Locals tip: Hide your food! Before you start your round the cart attendant will supply you with a Nature Valley granola bar. I have not seen a bar make it past the third hole without a squirrel hopping into the cart grabbing the bar and then having themselves a nice snack. They are harmless but defiantly not shy. Just because you are in the cart don’t think they won’t join you.

If you would like to play this beautiful golf course and choose from many others log onto http://www.golfzoo.com/ and click on the Myrtle Beach link.

Will Bill Energize Golf Industry?

Energy regulations signed by President Bush could give the Grand Strand's golf industry a boost, with more evening daylight hours translating into increased revenue at area courses. However, some Myrtle Beach course owners say the tradeoff of one less hour of light in the morning has the potential to hurt their bottom lines.

The Energy Act of 2005, among other things, extends daylight-savings time by four weeks each year beginning in 2007. Some Myrtle Beach area golf leaders say more daylight in the evening will let golfers stay on courses longer. especially during the peak spring season, This will add three weeks to daylight savings time in March and another week in November. While other golf course leaders feel that an extra hour of daylight in the evening means one less hour in the morning and the afternoon business will come at the cost of the higher priced morning rounds. For example- morning rounds between $85-$100 replays are usually a spur of the moment decision by a lot of groups for the cost of a $22.00 cart fee.

Eagle Mountain - My overall favorite in Scottsdale

Played The Golf Club at Eagle Mountain last week, and it had been quite a while since I tee'd it up there. It only took me getting to the first tee to remember why it is still one of my all time favorite tracks.

#1, a 582 yard par 5 has a gradual slope downward from the tips all the way to the green - a solid tee shot, and you'll have a go at it in two. (I of course got on in regulation, then three yanked for a bogey...) Both #1 and #10 offer extraordinary views from elevated tees - it's worth stopping for a minute to get a photo op here... #10 is a true "3 shot" par 5 with water all the way down the left hand side. The biggest of hitters may have a chance to go at this green, but for me (a 14 handicapper), it's Driver, 7 iron, then wedge. A truly great par 5 - one of the best par 5's in the valley.

Another reason I love Eagle is that course designer Scott Miller was looking out for those of us who can't remember the last time we hit a bucket of balls. Most of the fairways there are "bowl shaped", so that even a seemingly errant tee shot often will bounce back down into the fairway, or at least get caught up in the rough without going OB. I think I actually only used 2 sleeves of balls all day. I don't know about you, but I have a hard time having fun when I get to the 7th or 8th tee, and have already hit 5 or 6 five dollar Pro V-1's into neverland....

In addition to a fantastic layout, and excellent conditions, (even in mid-August), the PEOPLE at Eagle Mountain make all the difference. Alot of the top rated courses like Eagle Mountain often have a "stuffy" feeling in the pro shop, and it seems as if the staff at other courses want you to feel as though you're lucky to be there. This is not the case at Eagle. You're always greeted with a warm smile and a "Welcome" from the guys behind the counter, the restaurant staff is exceptional, and the "Player Assistants" are nice guys who actually there to HELP YOU, rather than scowl at you if you're 7 minutes behind. It's refreshing to see the "Ranger" or "Player assistant" coming up behind you, only to give you a friendly wave as he passes through.

I've been playing alot of golf in Phoenix / Scottsdale since 1999, and I can honestly say that overall, The Golf Club at Eagle Mountain has been my most enjoyable experience of any course in the valley.

If you're coming to Scottsdale, don't leave town with out teeing it up at Eagle.

Amelia Island has it all!

Amelia Island offers 1,350 acres of natural splendor. It is nestled between the waves of the Atlantic Ocean and the salt marshes of the Intracoastal Waterway. There are a few options too chose from when it comes to accommodations. There is the beautiful 249-room Amelia Inn with private balconies overlooking the Atlantic. There are also numerous one-, two- and three- bedroom spacious condominium villas just minutes from the Amelia Inn.

When it comes to golf , there are 54 holes designed by three of the world's most distinguished golf architects - Pete Dye, Tom Fazio and Bobby Weed. These courses will test golfers of all skill levels. For you golfers that have seen the recent Taylor Made commercials - "own the tee", the 16th tee box on the Ocean Links course is used for that commercial.

The resort also has plenty of other things to keep everyone occupied - shoppes, restaurants, tennis, pools and a spa. Amelia Island Plantation is a wonderful stay and play resort. The golf is unlimited daily!

If your looking to play a lot of golf daily or just a couple of rounds on the weekend - I would strongly advise giving Amelia Island Plantation a shot. For information about golf packages at Amelia Island - please visit www.golfzoo.com or call 888.333.6103

Orlando golf on a Grand Scale

From the moment you go through the guard gate at Grand Cypress in Orlando, Florida - you know your in for a special day. Grand Cypress is 45 holes designed by Jack Nicklaus. The North and South course opened in 1984, with the East following soon after in 1986. The North, South and East are typical Nicklaus - tall mounds, well positioned water, and tough greens with bunkers positioned to catch slightly errant shots. The New course is a complete contrast to the other courses. The new course was opened in 1988 and is like playing the Old Course at St. Andrews. The driving areas are very large, but well positioned pot bunkers await the unsuspecting Titleist Pro V1x.

Grand Cypress is a stay and play facility. There are 1 - 4 bedroom villa's available right on property. Grand Cypress is offering unlimited golf to their guest from now until 9/30/05. The first round is booked, then the second round is set up day of play.

The golf courses have hosted such tournaments as the World Cup of Golf, Greg Norman's Shark Shootout, Skills Challenge and the LPGA.

Any golfer that is looking for quality facilities, quality service and especially quality golf - then Grand Cypress is your place. To book a stay and play at Grand Cypress, please go to www.golfzoo.com or call 888.333.6103.

TPC Golf- Las Vegas Style

My first impression with the TPC at the Canyons clubhouse from the outside was very classy and understated. Then you are reminded this is a PGA Tour facility and course by the posters from the Michelin Championship and TPC pin flags. Located in Summerlin about 20 minutes west of the Strip, TPC offers a quality golf experience through their excellent service and quality playing surfaces. There are several hotel casinos close to the course and very easy to do a stay and play package in Summerlin.

But let's talk about the golf. It is a great desert golf experience with many trees, deep canyons and even water!!! Multiple sets of tees accommodate every level of golfer from beginner to single digit handicaps. There are still many "gut check" shots to be had from any tees. The subtle changes in elevation along with the desert breeze will have you debating club selection often. Due to a slightly higher elevation than the Strip area, TPC is able to maintain bent grass greens which provide a faster, more consistent putting surface. It a great feature of the course.

I encourage anyone that comes to Vegas to get away from the Strip for a few hours and play one of PGA Tour's finest facilities. You can find more information on Las Vegas golf and book a golf getaway at the TPC Canyons at www.golfzoo.com

Myrtle Beach Dining

Living in Myrtle Beach for the past 19 years my quest has been to find a great Italian Restaurant being from New York. I have to say I am quite spoiled, I have dined at all the most popular spots, and then one evening I dined at Luigis, and low and behold I came to the end of my quest, Luigi's has an extensive Menu and daily specials at least 10 a day but the great part is if there is something you really want that is not on the menu or the specials just ask Luigi and he will make it for you, yes there is a Luigi, a true Italian Chef, who does all the cooking himself from the bread, with the awesome dipping oil to the brushetta which is a staple at the eatery on the table as soon as you sit down, to the homemade pasta dishes, My favorite is The Chicken Florentine as well as The Veal Marsala, they only serve Beer and Wine but they have some great Chianti's to choose from, Dress is casual, Luigis is located on 52nd Ave N Kings Hwy, in Myrtle Beach, for dining on a weekend, please make a reservation. Luigis is quaint and the tables fill up quickly, being a locals favorite spot, Phone # 843-692-9294

Grazie,

"I brought eleven of the most hard-to-please guys I know on this golf trip. Without exception, everyone was very impressed. Shortly after I dragged myself into the office this morning, I started receiving the e-mails asking when we were doing it again. I would recommend GolfZoo to anyone.

This was my first attempt at setting up a golf trip and I was very apprehensive. Chris put me at ease the first time we spoke on the phone. Chris knew exactly what we were looking for got it done. The trip went off without a hitch. The rental cars were new, the courses were terrific, the accommodations were better than advertised and the top-notch service continued until the day we left. Simply put, Chris did an awesome job!!

'The Estate' is the ideal place for a larger golf group. The Estate was clean, decorated tastefully and had all the amenities (big screen TV, poker table, pool table, swimming pool, and most importantly, the kegerator). Lisa did a great job cleaning, shopping, finding us places to eat and making sure we were always comfortable." - Anthony J (vacationed to Arizona).

"Serenity now"

I just went to Jekyll Island for the first time. In the infamous words of George Castanza's dad, "serenity now" is very appropriate for this golf destination. Jekyll Island has 63 holes of golf at one location. There are 3 - 18 hole courses and one 9 hole course. Each course winds its way through thick Georgia woods and water. All the courses are unique and full of character. While on the island I stayed at Jekyll Oceanfront Resort. This facility has a combination of standard hotel rooms, along with one and two bedroom villas. Amenities include a very good steak restaurant, tiki bar, nice size pool, and live music and karoke on the weekends.

Jekyll Island is the perfect getaway for a group of golfers, just looking to relax and play golf. Jekyll Island is southern hospitality at its finest. From either the Jekyll Oceanfront Resort or the Island Club Hotel - the golf is within 10 minutes.

Next time you find yourself yelling "Serenity now!", help is just a website away - www.golfzoo.com.

Grayhawk Talon - Better Bring your "A" Game!

Played Grayhawk Talon last Sunday, and was quite humbled, but still impressed...

It had been at least a year since I had played either the Raptor or the Talon course at Grayhawk, so I played the Talon course, remembering that it was a little more forgiving than the Raptor. (The last time I played Raptor, all I could remember was trying to hit 4 irons out of fairway bunkers all day, which lead me to drink myself through the back nine...)

The Talon course is definately the more user friendly for handicaps of 12-20. After having a nice breakfast at Phil's Grille, my playing partner and I thoroughly enjoyed hacking our way around Talon.

The highlight of the day was #17, "Devils Drink" a 114 yard dicey par 3 (wedge) that's is all carry over water. I won the $5.00 "closest to the pin" bet, and then (of course) three yanked it and paid my buddy $10.00. Although either course at Grayhawk has always been a challenge for me, I escaped with a somewhat respectable 87.

The staff (as always) was excellent, and conditions were prime time. The dogs at the turn are one of the best in the valley!

If you're the typical bogey golfer, then I would stongly recommend the Talon course first, then try your luck (and believe me, you'll need some) on the Raptor.

Dinosaur is still my absolute favorite...

Played Dinosaur Mtn at Gold Canyon last Saturday - with all the rain we received in January and February, the conditions were phenomenal - the best I have ever seen in the 6 years I've been playing out there.

Greens were slick and perfect, and the rough was mowed low and tight. Just like a hack like me needs it to be....

This course definitely has the most dramatic elevation changes and breathtaking views of any course in the valley. #2 and #5 are two of the best par 3's in Scottsdale in my opinion - both require picking the right stick. #2 is 174 from the blues where I'd normally hit a hard 6 iron, but with the elevation change, I hit an 8-iron long. At hole #5 - Ya gotta play it from the tips...it's a 236 yard shot, but with the elevation change, you should be able to get home with a 3 or 4 iron - awesome views. This tee box is where you should break out the camera.

If you haven't played "The Dino" yet, now is the time. I promise you won't be disappointed.
